Trading standards in Lincolnshire have been carrying a crackdown on illicit cigarettes in the county.

Not only do criminals who supply them avoid paying tax but also illegal cigarettes don't usually have the same safety measures in place.

That means they may burn for longer increasing the risk of a fire.

Police and trading standards in the Stamford area and across Lincolnshire say they're determined to take action against those involved in the practice.

Last year alone there were 220 thousand confiscated in the county.

They've also been working with landlords on tackling the issue.

Many of them were shocked to find such activity was taking place amongst their tenants and have taken action accordingly.

Others however have been less proactive.

In some cases trading standards and police have gone further.

Almost 20 landlords have been stopped from renting their properties after concerns were raised as part of the operation.

Police say they want to be reasonable and will work with them as much as possible.

However they stress they will go further on occasions.

They also say anyone involved in supplying illicit cigarettes could face a jail sentence if caught.
