Police in Peterborough are expecting to see a rise in incidents this weekend as some people finish work for the Christmas break.

They're preparing for ‘Mad Friday’ which usually sees more people out and drinking in the city.

It's known as one of the busiest days for emergency services due to increased alcohol consumption.

Our planning for this started really early

Inspector Sam Tucker, Cambridgeshire police inspector for Peterborough city centre said:

"This is a period that we know is coming for the whole year so our planning for it started really early."

"We know that there's an increase of people attending the night time economy and we know that will lead to an increase in drinking."

"We know that there could be an increase in violence and antisocial behaviour in this period."

"We will be responding appropriately by increasing our engagement with people and our visibility in the area."

"We have been engaging with the licensed community ensuring that we have a good understanding of what events are taking place and what type of incidents are taking place in the community."

There could be an increase in violence and antisocial behaviour

People displaying antisocial behaviour could be banned from the city centre for three months as part of community protection warnings.

Police say this is to ensure a safe environment for people out in the city at night.
