Young people across Peterborough are set to gain from a significant expansion of out-of-school youth services and activities, thanks to a new national funding initiative announced today by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Peterborough City Council is among 12 local authorities selected to benefit from the Local Youth Transformation pilot, part of a wider £88 million government investment aimed at reconnecting young people with their communities and equipping them with essential life and work skills.

As part of the scheme, youth clubs, schools, and community organisations such as the Scouts and Guides will receive support to offer more after-school programmes and places for young people in local neighbourhoods.

Peterborough’s inclusion in the £8 million pilot programme will help the city develop a high-quality out-of-school offer, while supporting a transition back to locally led youth services.

The council is currently awaiting confirmation of its specific allocation. Once details are finalised, officers will collaborate with local partners to create an action plan to shape and implement a vibrant, community-driven youth services strategy.

Councillor Katy Cole, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have successfully secured funding as part of this vitally important scheme, which again demonstrates this government’s commitment to supporting young people.

"We are fully committed to making Peterborough a 'child friendly' city, alongside having ambitious plans to establish the first Youth Zone in the region in the city.

"This funding will help develop a local youth offer which addresses the needs of young people in Peterborough and supports government priorities.

"We will work to secure a high quality youth offer reflecting the changing needs of young people and enabling them to lead richer lives.”
