They are warning people about the dangers this can have on pets.
Keep all chocolate out of the dogs reach
New statistics from The Kennel Club show that cases of chocolate poisoning in dogs increase by 50% over Easter, compared to an average month.
As well as this, nearly a fifth of all claims for chocolate poisoning in 2024 for dogs were made in March and April, in the lead-up to and in the aftermath of the Easter period.
It can quickly progress to seizures or even death
Ellyn Groat, who works as a small animal vet in Peterborough, said:
"Keep all chocolate out of the dogs reach and if kids are eating chocolate just keep the dog out of the room."
"We know that mistakes happen so if the worst comes to the worst then call your vet."
"Symptoms could start with something like vomiting or diarrhoea but they can quickly progress to seizures or even death if they have high quantities of it."
"The idea if you identify it before the symptoms begin so that we can get it out of their stomach as soon as possible."
