A charity that supports elderly people across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire are seeing demand for their services increase, while they predict it is going to get worse.

It comes as a recent report highlighted that almost 1 in 4 pensioners could be living in poverty by 2040.

The report commissioned by Independent Age from the Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence, predicts that:

  • If the poverty levels continue on the same year-on-year trend, poverty among older people will increase from 17% to 23% by 2040.
  • That would see the number of people in poverty in later life increasing from 2.1 million to 3.9 million.
  • Poverty will increase for older women than older men.

The report also details how older people living with a disability will increase significantly from 18%, to almost 30%.

Age UK are a charity that support elderly people across the country with wide range of areas.

Lynette Herron is the Deputy Chief Executive at Age UK, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. She told us, "The demand definitely has increased and it's something that we can see continuing to increase.

"So we are hoping to be able to bolster our information and advice team to meet that demand."

"We often have a waiting list for these services"

Lynette says that Ague UK in our region aim to provide individual support to everyone who comes to them for support. She says family members can reach out for support for their loved ones, "Give us a call, our information advice team will be happy to help them so we can help them not only with that, but access to a lot of the other services.

"We offer that sort of wrap around support for people connecting them into their community and raising awareness of other services that are available to them."
