11 nuclear test veterans have received medals in Peterborough.

The Nuclear Test Medals were awarded at a ceremony at Peterborough Town Hall on Monday evening.

Amongst those being commemorated was former Peterborough mayor Alan Dowson.

The medals were awarded in recognition of veterans who were exposed to the effects of the UK's nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific throughout the 1950s.

Many suffered illnesses from the effects of harmful radiation.

The ceremony took place after Councillors passed a motion in December calling for the impacts on the veterans to be recognised.

It also called for the government to issue to an apology to nuclear test veterans.
