A 22-year-old man from Peterborough has been jailed after a campaign of abuse against his own mother. Tamour Nawaz has admitted several offences including controlling and coercive behaviour.

The man smashed the windows of their house with a brick in Atherstone Avenue in Peterborough, after he said he felt she was ignoring him.

Other methods of intimidation he used included throwing the dinner she made him on the floor and making her clean it up, as well as waking her up in her sleep demanding her to cook for him.

At the arrest, Tamour assaulted two officers, kicking them and putting one in a headlock.

He's also been jailed for two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker and driving without insurance.

Detective Constable Maisy Napier, who investigated, said: “Nawaz continually demanded food, money and a phone and consistently lost his temper when his mother didn’t act immediately on his demands.

“No mother should be subjected to this kind of abuse – fearing daily intimidation from their son. Coercive control is a criminal offence and we take reports of it seriously.

“This kind of behaviour has long-lasting effects on victims as well as the impact at the time. This case highlights that coercive and controlling behaviour is exactly that, irrespective of the relationship dynamic it occurs within.

“We encourage anyone who is a victim of any kind of domestic abuse to contact police or call the national domestic violence helpline on 0808 2000 247.”
