Two men jailed after brutal hammer attack
The victim sustained serious injuries, including the permanent loss of sight in his left eye
Two men who carried out a violent attack with a hammer and hockey stick, leaving their victim with life-changing injuries, have been jailed.
Bartholomew Cronin, 46, and Ziggy Dunn, 36, assaulted the man outside his home in Lowick Gardens, Westwood, Peterborough at around midday on 5 November last year.
The victim had been installing a replacement CCTV camera when Cronin came out of Dunn’s house next door and made what appeared to be a threat. When the victim approached to confront him, Cronin pulled a hammer from his waistband and waved it in the air.
Dunn then rushed out of his home with a hockey stick, and together the pair launched their attack. The man was knocked to the ground, where Dunn struck him to the back of the head and left eye with the hammer.
The victim sustained serious injuries, including the permanent loss of sight in his left eye, and was taken to Peterborough City Hospital after police and paramedics gave first aid at the scene.
Both men initially fled back into Dunn’s property but later returned to issue further threats before leaving again. They were arrested soon afterwards, with Dunn returning to the scene where police detained him.
At Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday (14 August), Cronin, of Lutton Grove, Westwood, was jailed for 32 months after admitting grievous bodily harm without intent.
Dunn, of Manton, Bretton, received a sentence of 40 months after pleading guilty to the same offence.
Detective Constable Elouise Hicks, who led the investigation, said: “This was an incredibly violent assault with weapons which has left the victim with lasting injuries, and its severity is reflected in the sentences handed to both men.”
