Fire safety experts are urging us to be careful before the temperature starts to drop in Peterborough, Stamford and Rutland.

It's been hotter than usual for this time of year but, before the colder weather draws in from tomorrow, we're being told to check for potential fire risks as we turn to heating our homes.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service station manager, Scott Fretwell, said chimneys can be a big cause for concern this time of year:

'There could be a build up of debris that's accumulated over the year. As the cost of living continues to bite, there's always a temptation to save money and skip sweeping the chimney.'

'The debris build-up in the flue can be set alight when heating the home, which could cause a significant fire. We attend around 100 fires a year involving chimneys.'

'You should also always ensure you use properly-treated wood; always use a fireguard with fires and make sure any embers are properly put out before going to bed.'

With the cost of living causing some of us to consider alternative forms of heating, there's a number of simple tricks and tips to follow to best ensure safety, Scott said:

'If you have a heating appliance that doesn't run off electricity, always make sure you've got a carbon monoxide alarm nearby - it's the only way to detect the harmful, colourless, odourless gas, which can be fatal.'

'...ensure flammable items such as furniture or drying clothes are placed well away from heaters and fires. Always check your escape routes, make sure they're clear from clutter.'
