The fountains at Peterborough’s Cathedral Square could be permanently switched off, as councillors are being asked to vote on the cost cutting move.

The two fountains spent last year switched off after it was estimated it would cost around £35,000 to repair and maintain them.

They've been a feature of the Cathedral for 14 years.

The fountains also cost an estimated £20,000 a year to run.

A public poll last year showed the majority of people wanted them off.

A council spokeswoman said: “As we look to balance our books we have looked at every area of the business for ways to make savings.

"This proposal is to lower the temperature of the Lido by one or two degrees.

“The Lido has 1.1 million litres of water in it because it is a 50 metre pool so by making this relatively minor adjustment it could save the council thousands of pounds throughout the season.

"Many Lidos and outdoor pools aren’t heated at all.”

It comes during the prolonged closure of the city’s Regional Pool, and the suggestion of lowering the temperature in the city’s outside Lido pools in order to save money.

The council, who have a £6.2 million shortfall for 2024-25, is set to meet on February 21st in order to finalise next years budget.
