Peterborough artist shortlisted for 2025 Turner Prize
Rene Matic is one of four artists shortlisted for the prestigious arts prize
An artist from Peterborough has been shortlisted for the prestigious Turner Prize.
Rene Matic, aged 27 from Peterborough but now living in London, was announced as one of four artists who had been shortlisted for the prize, which recognises the best visual artist in Britain.
Matic's nomination was confirmed at the Tate Britain on Wednesday (April 23rd) for their first solo exhibition to be shown at an art institution.
The work, titled As Opposed to the Truth, touched on ideas representing right-wing populism and identity politics, both of which have seen increases in recent years.
Their work had been praised by judges for bringing "concerns around belonging and identity" to the fore, "conveying broader experiences of a young generation and their community through an intimate and compelling body of work".
Matic's pieces have been interpreted through "the lens of rudeness", which had been taken from rudeboy culture - a subculture from Jamaica.
As well as this, Rene is currently running an ongoing piece of artwork titled Restoration, which looks at "antique black dolls salvaged by the artist".
This also includes a flag which contains quotes from political leaders who have said there is "no place for violence" following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
Matic was nominated alongside three London-based artists: Glasgow-born Nnena Kalu; Iraqi-Swede Mohammed Sami and Canada-born Zadie Xa.
The winner of the prestigious prize will be announced at an awards ceremony in Bradford on December 9th.
