Flooding has left parts of Rutland counting the cost in recent years—and now, locals are being offered help to guard against it.

A free event at the council offices in Oakham today brings together flood experts, emergency crews and residents to share advice on staying safe and reducing future damage.

Flooding can have a devastating impact

Those attending can get practical tips, check their flood risk and learn from people who’ve dealt with flooding first-hand.

Councillor Christine Wise, Rutland County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport, Environment and Communities, said:

It's important that we all know how to prepare for severe weather

"Flooding is a growing risk, with climate change leading to more frequent extreme weather events."

"While the risk of severe flooding in Rutland is lower than other areas, Rutland has had areas that have experienced first-hand the challenges that flooding can bring, from disrupted travel and damaged homes, to the emotional impact on families and businesses."

"It is therefore important that we all know how to prepare for severe weather, stay safe and prevent damage from flooding."

"It is clear that flooding can have a devastating impact, but with the right knowledge and preparation, communities can greatly reduce the risk and recover more quickly."

"Flood Mary is about bringing people together, sharing information, and empowering residents to take simple, effective steps to protect their homes, businesses, and neighbourhoods."

The event will run from 2pm to 6pm at Rutland County Council's Catmose office.
