Peterborough smokers urged to quit in New Year scheme
A 12-week programme is being offered to encourage people to quit smoking in 2025
People in Peterborough are urged to stop smoking in 2025.
A stop-smoking campaign to raise awareness of the support available to help people quit has been launched by Peterborough City Council and Healthy You.
They're offering a free 12-week programme which supported over 380 last year.
They say you’re five times more likely to quit smoking with support.
The campaign aims to encourage Peterborough residents to make 2025 the year they quit smoking for good.
Councillor Dr Shabina Qayyum, cabinet member for adults and health at Peterborough City Council, said:
"We all know that smoking significantly increases the risk of lung cancer and heart disease and can in turn increase your risk of having a stroke."
"It also is a huge risk factor for dementia and a whole host of other problems."
"We've seen the cost of living crisis has been hitting people. Evidence shows that if you stop smoking, you can save up to £2400 a year."
"From a financial perspective, it's a good New Year's resolution and from a health perspective."
"One of the main reasons people resort to smoking is stress. It's something people turn to in order to combat stress."
"The other reason is because they've started from a very young age."
"It's these types of narratives we need to squash."
The programme includes 1:1 weekly support and access to tools such as nicotine patches, vapes and medication.
The next drop-in sessions where people can access free advice, hear more about the service and how to sign up is Monday 6 January at Serpentine Green and Tuesday 14 January at Queensgate Centre.
