166-year-old disused Stamford rail station to become £900,000 luxury home

The three-bedroom house will be built around part of the original platform

An old Stamford and Rutland railway station that was in operation for over one-hundred years is being transformed into a new home.

Ryhall and Belmesthorpe station shut down in 1959, but now its 4.8-acre plot will be used for a three-bedroom house worth £900,000.

Ryhall and Belmesthorpe station opened in 1856, closed in June 1959, and has been disused ever since

The property will be fittingly called 'The Old Station', and part of the original platform will form the base of the build - the pillars from the level crossing are also still on the plot.

Now with planning permission approved, there will be a large emphasis on environmental factors, while the design allows for two en-suite bathrooms and a family bathroom, a large open plan kitchen and living area, utility room and private reading and study spaces with views out onto the garden space surrounding.

The 'Old Station' is situated on Main St in Belmesthorpe - 2.8 miles from Stamford and within a mile of Ryhall

Managing Editor of Rail Magazine, Nigel Harris, tells us he's pleased that the little bit of local history is being brought back to life:

'It's not unusual for old station sites to be turned into very desirable homes and I've seen people do all sorts of things with them. I saw one epic conversion where the person had made a swimming pool between the two platforms. '

'When I first discovered this site about 10 years ago it was completely overgrown, you would've never known it was there unless you caught sight of those gateposts - so to see it cleared and alive again as a residence while paying tribute to its passing, that's really good.'

'You could hop on a train there (Ryhall and Belmesthorpe), change at Essendine and go to London with a single change. Now, of course, if you could still do that, you could be in Paris in just two train changes.'
