Rutland railway station looks set to lose its ticket office under a plan to shut 1,000 offices nationally.

A proposal was put forward from the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), a body which represents private railway operators., to replace staffed counters with self-service machines.

Other stations potentially losing their office include; Hinckley, Loughborough, Market Harborough, Melton, Narborough and East Midlands Parkway.

East Midland's Railway has launched a three-week public consultation on the proposal.

EMR said that on average, "less than five percent of all tickets sold for its trains are bought are ticket offices", as people are instead using self service machines or purchasing online.

That figure was more than 80 percent in the mid-1990's according to the company.

EMR added the staff would move into "customer help roles" to allow them to offer more "face-to-face" support.

The idea has been criticised, particularly by local politicians.

A motion has been put forward to a Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, meeting next week calling for the Hinckley's office to be saved.
