The Oakham All Saints Scout group are delivering Christmas trees to people across Rutland this festive season.

The scheme, which see's the young people deliver and then recycle the trees after Christmas, was launched last year.

Despite Covid-19, the group have nearly doubled the number of orders this year, reaching more than 110 already.

Chris Elmer, the assistant scout leader said they've had to change how they deliver the trees because of the pandemic:

"Last year we had scouts handing out leaflets in Oakham at the famers market and on the day they were sorting out the trees, jumping in the vans, delivering the trees with their Santa hats on.

Sadly this year, leaders are doing it in their bubbles, with masks on, all the hand sanitiser. We can't really involve the young people at all, but with any luck we will be back next year all running it together.

Someone's son bought his parents a surprise Christmas tree, so we will walk up the driveway on Saturday morning.

Someone's bought a tree for their road, so I think all the people have come together to buy one."

When the Christmas period is over, you can book a slot for the group to come and collect the tree. Due to coronavirus restrictions, they're asking people to leave the tree on their driveways, so they can come and take it away safely.

Usually, the money would go towards activities and other important things for the group. However, this year the young people are putting forward charities that they'd like some of the fundraising to go towards. They'll then have a vote to decide what charities will receive a donation.

Chris said:

"Fundraising has stalled, so this is going to go a good way to helping the group grow.

A small percentage of the profits will go to some local charities.

We've asked them to nominate charities that they know about that might benefit from a donation, maybe they've got personal experience, or they've heard about it.

Because some charities haven't been able to do anything this year, they've really struggled, we are lucky to have the Christmas trees."

People must place their order by Thursday 26th November.

The site will stay open over the festive period for people to book a recycling slot.
