A Stamford nursery says they should be kept open during the national lockdown, after seeing regression in children's development after the first lockdown.

Acorn Childcare Centre is open to children up to 5 years old; they say it's not easy to teach toddlers social skills remotely.

During the first lockdown, in March 2020, the government shut all nurseries, but this time they're open in England and Wales.

Ministers have insist the risks are low, with nurseries providing support for working parents.

Lorna Hodgett, the central manager at Acorn Childcare centre said:

"There's only so much you can do on Zoom, I think with the school's there's education, they are learning, they are teaching subjects, whereas in early years, we have children from 3 months up to 5 years, definitely no substitute for that, because of the social element."

She said after the first lockdown, they did notice regression in some children:

"We did notice a difference, even with the older children, with their social skills.

"They kind of almost forgot how to play in a sense with each other, so that's the greatest concern.

"And also, it might seem a long way off, but school readiness for our pre-school, it has a massive impact, that's communicated by our parents the most."
