More parents will have to rely on food banks to feed their children as schools break up for the summer holidays.

Rutland Foodbank on Melton Road, Oakham, is expecting a surge in demand with the cost of living at an all-time high.

Chairman of Rutland Foodbank Ali Wainwright said: “I don’t think we’ve seen the worst of it.

“We’ve got people who are in work but still not able to really manage their situation.

“It’s a really difficult balance for families because what do you choose? Do you choose to pay for fuel or do you feed your family?”

Ali added that families are often unfairly criticised for needing to use the food bank, which is part of The Trussell Trust.

“There are so many people very quick to judge and to blame parents and families for not being able to cook and I know that’s not the case.

“When you chat to parents about what’s happening to them, a lot of it’s nothing to do with anything they’ve got any control over.”

As well as seeing more families at the food bank, they’ve also had more elderly people seeking support this year.

“It’s beginning to impact upon older residents. I think for you to ask for help in your 70s must be a very hard thing to do.”

Ali Wainwright received an MBE for her services to the community in February.
