We're informed that Police in Rutland will start 'patrolling with a purpose' there.

That's an objective which's been set by the county's new Police and Crime Commissioner.

Rupert Matthews wants the force to develop a better relationship with the public in the process:

"The police really need to get out there proactively and start talking to people.

"I'll be encouraging officers to stick their head into the door of the village pub and having a word with the landlord every now and then.

"That's not what's done really these days, but I think it there's a place for that in the daily routine of police officers across Rutland.

"I'm absolutely determined that Rutland will be recognised as a county in its own right, with its own policing priorities.

Mr. Matthews is also eager to alter the perception of the force locally:

"I'm very keen that every school in Rutland should have a police liaison officer, who goes in regularly to talk to the children, and also establishes in the minds of young people that the police uniform is a positive thing."

The Conservative candidate has replaced Lord Willy Batch, who stood down last month after 5 years in the role.
