A new strategy is to be considered by Rutland County Council which could finally make progress to build houses on the St Georges Barracks site.

The original idea for the North Luffenham site was to build around two thousand homes there.

The process was however derailed when Councillors voted not to accept a Government infrastructure grant of almost 30 million pounds back in March.

Now it's been suggested the Council completely restarts the process of creating a local plan at a cost of 1.3 million.

It would see consultations on future housing provision but if the St Georges idea was included and signed off by the Government it would strengthen its case.

The possibility of scrapping the current local plan and consulting on a new one will be debated by Councillors a week today.

All Local Planning Authorities must have a valid Local Plan that sets out where future housing, employment and other development will take place over a 15-year period.

Local Plans are also used to decide planning applications and other planning matters.

The previous local plan was sent for independent examination back in February.

It was the result of 5 years of consultations.

The decision to reject the offer of infrastructure money "undermines" the case for homes at St Georges Barracks.

It also "impacts the soundness of the local plan".

Therefore the recommendation is to start the process for a new one.

The Special Full Council meeting to discuss the Local Plan is due to take place on Wednesday 1 September, starting at 7.00pm.

The meeting will be held at the Rutland Showground, as Rutland County Council’s offices continue to be used as a COVID-19 vaccination centre.
