New proposals for which areas each MP represents says Stamford should become one constituency with Rutland
The Boundary Commission has suggested the merger
The Stamford and Rutland region will share one MP if proposed changes to constituencies become reality.
The Boundary Commission has suggested the merger of the two areas as part of a nationwide strategy to make the number of voters in each constituency more equal.
The review said the move was “necessary” to balance out the figures.
“We decided the most appropriate crossing between Rutland and Lincolnshire is to include parts of the South Kesteven local authority with Rutland,” said the report.
“We therefore propose a Rutland and Stamford constituency, comprising the entirety of the Rutland unitary authority and 11 South Kesteven wards.”
It suggests Stamford splits from Grantham and is joined with Rutland, and the new area wouldn't include places like Melton.
Rutland MP Alicia Kearns says she'll be taking her time to look into the proposals but any changes must protect services and representation.
The proposals are now out for public consultation until August 2, 2021.
An interactive consultation website – www.bcereviews.org.uk – shows the changes in more detail.
A further round of consultations is set to take place in spring 2022 following which final consultations will run that autumn
