21 new-build homes will be made temporarily available to Ukrainian refugees in Stamford and South Kesteven.

South Kesteven District Council today announced that nearly £4.5m had been raised via Government funding and SKDC reserves to purchase the properties.

SKDC is moving £2,383,750 from revenue reserves to partly fund the purchases

The properties will be added to SKDC's social housing portfolio - for use initially by Afghan and Ukrainian evacuee families.

The Leader of South Kesteven District Council, Cllr Kelham Cooke, said: “This humanitarian gesture is something we should all be proud of, as it gives something back to those who supported the UK in Afghanistan and to Ukrainians escaping the terrible suffering in their own country.

“This investment will help refugees in their hour of need and create a lasting legacy by providing housing to help address local demand, and reduce future homelessness pressures for local people as the evacuees move out of the system.”

The accommodation will be available to refugees until their visas expire in 3-5 years time.

SKDC hope to purchase 19 two-bed or three-bed new build homes, and 2 four-bed plus properties.

SKDC is one of three local authorities in Lincolnshire to be selected to benefit from the Local Authority Housing Fund, among just 180 nationwide.
