More than 2,000 people received a COVID-19 vaccination at the weekend, at a series of clinics hosted by King Power Stadium.

The clinics took place from Friday to Sunday, and offered first, second and booster doses, as well as third primary doses for the those most at risk.

Caroline Trevithick, Executive Director of Nursing, Quality and Performance and Deputy Chief Executive of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Groups, said:

"We were really pleased to see so many people come along for their jabs.

"This was the third time we’ve held vaccine clinics at King Power Stadium, and every time it proves more popular than before – we had just over a thousand people at our previous weekend of clinics in September, and this weekend we saw almost double that figure.

"It’s great to see the message is being heard by people in and around Leicester – that it’s really important that we all get vaxxed to stay on track with our lives.

"The best way to protect yourselves and your loved ones from becoming seriously ill with Covid-19 is to get the vaccine."

More people are now eligible for the booster vaccine, as the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that all adults aged 40 to 49 years should also be offered a booster dose, six months after their second dose.

The JCVI also announced that all 16 to 17 year olds should be offered a second dose of the vaccine, 12 weeks or more after the first vaccine dose.

Leicester’s Director of Public Health, Professor Ivan Browne, said:

"It’s good to see that so many people took advantage of this walk-in clinic to get their jabs.

"Although this particular clinic has now closed, there are lots of places in Leicester where you can get jabbed, from local pharmacies to vaccination centres.

"Vaccination is still the best protection you can get against Covid-19, and with cases rising locally I would urge anyone who hasn’t yet had all the vaccinations for which they are eligible, to make arrangements to get them now."
