Many pet owners in Peterborough struggle to afford the cost of looking after their animals
It's thought that could be lead to more pets being abandoned
It appears many pet owners in Peterborough are struggling with the costs of looking after an animal with 21% of local owners worried that they can’t afford their upkeep.
This could be causing the rise in abandoned pets.
A pet food bank in Peterborough is trying to tackle the issue by giving out donated pet food and equipment.
Caroline Camargo, Founder of Munch by Margo in Peterborough spoke to us:
There's nothing specific for pet parents
"I think it's important because pets are part of the family and it's really important they don't ever feel like they have to get rid of their pets because they're struggling financially."
"There's a lot of things out there to help families with young children or families on their own."
"However there's nothing specific for pet parents."
"I'm a pet parent myself and I know even when I'm struggling I would go without to make sure my pets have what they need."
"So far in 6 months we've provided 2376 meals for pets just around the Peterborough area."
We all need help sometimes and that's OK
"That just shows the demand the need for a service like what I'm providing."
"Some of the families that usually tend to be quite shy about asking for help or feel ashamed about asking for help."
"I think that's something I reiterate a lot about how it doesn't matter what your social status is - we all need help sometimes and that's OK."
