Police were called to the Ortongate Shopping Centre just after 2 o clock yesterday afternoon.
It follows reports of violence in the car park there.
They found a man in his 50s who was seriously hurt, he remains in a critical condition.
A 55-year-old man from Peterborough has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.
