It's revealed that Peterborough could gain an international rail station.
Peterborough City Council say they are in negotiation with French officials representing parties interested in bringing international rail travel North of London.
It's part of a new Peterborough Economic Growth Strategy was approved by Peterborough City Council’s cabinet on Tuesday, 15 October.
It aims to coordinate the economic growth of the city by ensuring all planned growth is underpinned by five guiding principles: sustainability, innovation/diversity, inclusiveness, attractiveness, and connectivity.
It will transform Peterborough into an international hub
Cabinet member for Growth and Regeneration at Peterborough City Council, Nick Thulbourn, said:
"If we can get this to come to fruition, it will change people's perception of why they should live in Peterborough, and for people that live here, it widens their opportunity significantly."
"It puts us on the map. The international rail station will highlight some of the things in Peterborough that are unique."
"For instance, Flag Fen should be a world heritage site, and people want to come; they're just not aware of it and can't access it."
"It's not just one international rail station that will change that, but it's another brick in the wall that will enable us to push to the fore some of the uniques of Peterborough."
"It will transform Peterborough into an international hub."
The Peterborough Economic Growth strategy is one of a trio of strategies from the council which aim to interconnect and make the city even more desirable to live, work and visit.
The two other strategies are the Visitor Economy Strategy, which was adopted at the same meeting as the Economic Growth Strategy, and the Employment and Skills Strategy, which will come later this year.
