Leicestershire Police launch new drink drive campaign for Summer 2024
With Euro 2024 underway, the number of drink and drug driving incidents has already gone up
With the European Football Championships underway, Police in Leicestershire are calling on those enjoying the tournament to do so responsibly.
A new Summer 2024 campaign is reminding locals not to drive when unfit while under the influence of drink or drugs.
Detective Inspector Steve Kelsey, heads the forces Serious Collision Investigation Unit. He said, "We know that many people will be looking forward to a month of international football, however, we want to remind drivers to be sensible.
"If you know you are going to be drinking, plan your transport home beforehand. Think about being the designated driver and choose non-alcoholic drinks.”
In 2023, Leicestershire Police arrested over 1600 people relating to drink and driving.
Kate Garrigan is the Watch Manager Community Safety at Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service. She said, "“All too often Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service colleagues deal with the devastating consequences of drivers who make these selfish choices when attending road traffic collisions.”
England play Denmark at 5pm in their second group stage match of the tournament.
Ahead of the game, Kate said, " What we are advising today if you are going to go out and socialise and enjoy the football, then don't even have one drink.
"If you're going to drink, leave your keys at home. Take a taxi, walk if you can or get a friend to pick you up."
Potential drink drug driving penalties:
- A minimum 12 month driving ban
- A criminal record
- A fine
- Up to six months in prison
