Leicestershire Police clamp down on dangerous driving
130 people have been arrested for drug and drink driving offences in August
Leicestershire Police have teamed up with multiple city council departments, part of a new campaign to clamp down on potentially fatal driving offences.
Their FATAL4 operation looks out for speeding, drink/drug driving, people using their mobile phone behind the wheel and driving without a seatbelt.
They have specifically targeted the Belgrave Road area, one of Leicester's main routes, where the city sees numerous traffic offences.
On Tuesday, hundreds of cars have been pulled off the road for impromptu safety checks.
Police were checking children's car seats, identifying illegally tinted windows, and examining licence plates.
Sergeant Rakhi Mistry, from the Leicestershire Police Belgrave Neighbourhood Team said: "There have been some fatal road traffic collisions here so we need to make sure we are educating people and the community are happy that the police are listening to them".
She said it was good the teams could come together saying it was a "bonus" it was during the week children went back to school.
"Today is a matter of pulling cars over that we think are just not right, or not driving in an appropriate manner and trying to educate people on what they have done wrong.
"It is important that the community sees that we are in our high vis, we are stopping traffic and we are doing something about it.
It follows a summer long drink/drug driving campaign which has seen 130 arrests across the Leicestershire Police Force area in the last month, 22 between 5am and 5pm.
One driver stopped recorded over five times the legal drink drive limit when breathalysed.
