Leicestershire band Easy life to change name to avoid costly court battle
The group says they've been forced into a David and Goliath situation- with no power to fight it out.
Leicestershire indie-pop group 'Easy Life' say they have been forced to change by the owners of Easy Jet.
The airline's bosses Easy Group say the bands name is too similar to theirs, claiming the name infringed on a trademark.
The band will not defend the high court lawsuit, saying the financial burden of doing so would be too high and it would stop them from releasing new music until 2025.
The group said in a statement: “We have realised that there are no good options available to us, and we need to change our name to move forward,” they wrote in a statement.
“We simply don’t have the funds to access a fair trial in the high court. Not to mention the fact that this would likely rattle on through to 2025, and with this hanging over us we wouldn’t be able to release any music in the meantime. Our careers, and indeed our lives, would be on hold.”
Easy Group says it will not comment until the end of a mediation period, but has previously said other companies pay royalties for the use of its brand name.
Easy Life formed in 2015, and released their debut single in 2017.
Both of their studio albums have reached No 2 in the UK charts.
Harriet Harman is among MPs calling for Easy Group to call off legal action.
