A specialist Covid-19 vaccine clinic is being opened up this week for people with learning disabilities in Leicestershire and Rutland.

The centre will open on Friday 28th October at Loughborough Hospital (Hospital Way, LE11 5JY) from 8am-8pm, with all adults and young people over the age of 12 eligible to book.

Specialist staff, longer appointment times and more comfortable waiting areas all help to make the experience that bit more calm for visitors.

People with learning disabilities were six-times more likely to die from coronavirus during the first wave of the pandemic

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust want as many people with learning disabilities to come forward as possible to get their 1st, 2nd or booster dose.

Learning disability nurse Sam Screaton tells us there's a number of ways the clinic will be specially catered to its visitors:

'We can distract them, there's been lots of singing and dancing, and we have fidget spinners - there's different sensory activities that we can do to sort of take the focus away from what we're actually doing if that's what people need us to do.'

She added: 'The appointments will be longer to allow people to come into the environment, to meet the staff. If people choose not to come into the environment because that's too stressful for them then we can come out to the car.'
