A group of volunteers have cleaned up a Peterborough cycle path and made a heart-warming discovery along the way.

The Peterborough Litter Wombles, joined by helpers from RSA and the Co-op, collected 20 bags of rubbish along the route from Bishops Road to the Embankment.

But among the litter was an unexpected find - six tiny kittens left in a box beside the path.

The group quickly contacted Peterborough Cat Rescue, who took the animals in and will arrange for them to be adopted.

The charity said the kittens were in good health and were being cared for.
