Golden 'Conundrum' Egg is being auctioned in Stamford today
In 2017 it sold at auction for £17,200
A Cadbury's golden 'Conundrum' egg, which is the size of a large goose egg, is being auctioned in Stamford today, and it's estimated to sell for between £15,000 to £20,000.
It first sold at auction on 1st July 2017 for £17,200 against pre-sale estimates of £10,000 - £15,000, the total price paid (incl. the 20% Buyer’s Premium) was £20,640!
The buyer had taken part in hunting for one of the twelve eggs in the 1980’s, and kept it safely hidden away for the last three years, until he passed away last year and the golden egg was inherited by his family.
His family gave the egg to Batemans Auctioneers to take to auction.
The history of the Golden Conundrum Egg:
In the 1980s, Cadbury's put on a treasure hunt, where twelve caskets containing a scroll were hidden at secret locations across the country. They were found through clues hidden in a book written by Don Shaw. If you cracked the clues, you'd find a hidden casket containing a golden egg.
However, there was a secret 13th larger egg in the series, which was awarded to a Cadbury’s retailer through a private draw.
Whilst the twelve 22ct gold treasure eggs were each based on a different story or verse and illustration in the book and weighed approximately 250g each, the thirteenth egg, also commissioned by Cadbury’s from Royal goldsmiths Garrard & Co was considerably larger at 323.6g and was based on the front cover of the book itself, incorporating elements of each of the twelve riddles.
Greg Bateman from Batemans Auctioneers said:
"It's the size of a large goose egg, about 8cm high and weighs a third of a kilogram.
"We hope it goes to someone who loves this spectacular egg, as much as we do.
