It's Mother's Day today and what's better to do on a Sunday than have a stroll around one of Rutland's most beautiful gardens.

The Rutland National Garden Scheme kicks of at Gunthorpe Hall today, and it's open to guests from 2-5pm.

It's the first of ten shortlisted gardens in the county that will be apart of the scheme, with all the proceeds going to nursing and healthcare charities.

Last year, Rutland's participating gardens raised £36,000, while the whole national scheme has raised £65m since it was first set up.

The one-day event can be experienced today at Gunthorpe Hall only, with the rest of the county's gardens set to open to the public throughout the year.

Organiser Lucy Hurst says only the most exceptional of gardens are picked, but she's on the lookout for new entries all the time:

"There are much larger counties but in terms of money raised, I think we're punching well above our weight with our ten gardens that we have. We have a huge amount of support and some very generous garden owners and our visitors who take time out to visit all these gardens."
