Foodbank supporting around 2,500 people in Stamford as Trussell Trust launches new campaign
Just under 1,000 of those people were reportedly children
Around 2,500 people in Stamford were supported with emergency food last year by the Stamford and Oundle Foodbank.
Just under 1,000 of those people were reportedly children.
It comes as the Trussell Trust launches a new campaign today (8 October) to stand against hunger.
Research out today shows that despite having something to eat as late as 7pm, more than two-thirds of children claim to have gone to bed feeling ‘ravenous’.
A study of 1,000 school-aged children, commissioned as part of a partnership with the Trussell Trust, found they often wake up hungry in the morning (88 per cent), with 34 per cent admitting they get irritated when they are hungry and 29 per cent end up feeling annoyed.
But, if a child’s friend told them they were hungry 60 per cent said they would share their food.
Sian Fytche, operations manager at Stamford and Oundle Foodbank, told Greatest Hits Radio about what difference she hopes the campaign will make here:
"Our vision as a foodbank and a group of trustees of the Stamford and Oundle Foodbank is for there to be no need for us to exist.
"We're very clear about that.
"What would be fantastic is if we actually see the need dropping in Stamford so that we don't need to be there in the future."
She added:
"We are very fortunate in Stamford to have a community that supports the foodbank, in terms of donations, incredibly well.
"The foodbank is there, please don't hesitate to give us a call, email us, get in touch.
"We will welcome you and do whatever we can to help you through that difficult situation."
