From today, fireworks and sparklers officially go on sale in Rutland today-fire services across the region are urging us to celebrate safely.

Figures show there were more than 100 hospital admissions of people injured by fireworks between 2020 and 2021.

Nick Stanborough is the station manager for Leicestershire's fire and rescue service.

He has this advice for anyone wanting to put on their own displays:

"Stand well away and don't throw fireworks.

"Don't go back to them once you've lit them and follow the instructions on the package.

"Obviously, it should only be over 18's that buy fireworks in the first place, and fireworks shouldn't be set off after 11pm.

"Spending a little bit of extra money on official fireworks from specific retailers is actually the right thing to do.

"Some of the cheaper ones aren't particularly safe, so be wary of that.

"We'd always advise people to go to a local display if anything like that is happening in the area."
