A Reform UK candidate has said the party is "making a statement" in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough politics.

The party's Ryan Coogan finished second in the mayoral elections behind Conservative Paul Bristow.

"We're making a real statement; this is a political party going places and we're putting that connection back between politics and people," Mr Coogan said.

Mr Coogan won 23.37% of the vote with 49,647 votes.

Anna Smith of Labour - who held the mayoral role up until this election - came third with 42,671 votes, while Lorna Dupre of the Liberal Democrats finished fourth and Bob Ensch of the Green Party fifth.

But although he wasn't able to win the mayoralty, Reform did win other mayoral elections in Hull & East Yorkshire and Greater Lincolnshire, as well as taking control of several councils.

"It's about that opportunity now, the talking has to finish," Mr Coogan added.

"We need to start winning these seats and putting in a plan to do that, and make no mistake, we are the opposition."
