The future of proposals for the St Georges barracks development at North Luffenham look likely to be decided at a meeting next month.

The plans to build over 2 thousand houses there were thrown into doubt after Rutland County Councillors voted to reject almost 30 million pounds of Government funding for the project.

National inspectors have been told to pause their examination of the local plan which outlines future development in the region until there's clarity on the matter.

The local plan is vital for future development as it means Government will be aware of the kind of projects each area is considering.

Inspectors have a chance to make comments at this stage.

Now that process will not continue until the outcome of the St Georges issue.

The council says that vote clearly has an impact on the local plan.

Two possible solutions have been identified.

One would see them seeking alternative funding sources or reviewing the project completely and those will be under discussion at the meeting in May.

The vote in March was a close one and it's thought some Councillors had doubts about what terms and conditions would apply if they accepted the funding.

St. George’s Barracks, is owned by the Ministry of Defence.

It's due to close in 2021/22, prompting proposals for a new Garden Community that would include up to 2,215 new houses, together with a further 30 possible houses on the site of the current Edith Weston School.
