Throughout December and January the wildlife trust in Rutland is holding a number of tree planting events for the community.

Over 13,000 will be planted on land adjacent to Holwell Nature Reserve - purchased by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust 4 years ago.

It's to create a better wildlife corridor and improve biodiversity in the area.

In a statement the Trust said: "The idea for the new wood came about when the trust purchased the land adjacent to the nature reserve about four years ago."

"Sandwiched between two existing parcels of woodland, it was an opportunity to plant up the area and connect the two woodlands, creating a better wildlife corridor full of biodiversity.

"When the woodland is established, it will be an area of native trees and diverse wildlife for the whole community of Melton Mowbray and the surrounding area to enjoy.

"The David Cock Foundation and the Forestry Commission - through the English Woodland Creation Grant (EWCO), have generously provided us with the funds to plant over 13,000 trees across a 6-hectare field as part of this significant woodland creation project.

"It will feature a mix of native tree species with different growing rates to ensure a robust and biodiverse woodland for the future and will establish a significant area dedicated to woodland for the future.

"The Forestry Commission have granted funds to support the project and have advised us on the best species and planting regime for the trees and shrubs."
