Conservative Darryl Preston has been named Cambridgeshire and Peterborough's Police and Crime Commissioner.

Votes for this year's elections were counted up today (Friday, 3rd May) as people across the county headed to the polls yesterday.

Mr Preston received 61,688 votes ahead of Labour's Anna Smith (58,304) and Edna Murphy of the Liberal Democrats (41,984).

The overall turnout for this year's elections was 25.63%, compared to 36.2% in 2021.

Mr Preston is a former senior detective in Cambridgeshire.

As well as holding the chief constable to account, his main priorities are tackling rural crime, anti-social behaviour, fighting violence and drugs and investing more money into safer roads.

"Yes (doubts of being re-elected), we've seen the national picture but how do I feel? I love my job - I've spent my life protecting the public and now I've got another four years (in office)," he said.

"My campaign was about what I've achieved and what I'd like to do going forward, not overly political, taking chunks out of my opponents, just talking about what we're doing here in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to keep our communities safe."
