Peterborough health leaders warn of disruption during doctors' strikes
Consultants and junior doctors are striking together for the first time today

Health leaders in Peterborough are telling us to expect disruption to usual services this week as doctors continue to go on strike.
Both senior and junior doctors at hospitals in Peterborough, Stamford and Rutland are due to walk out today for the first time ever.
Consultants in England who are with the British Medical Association are walking out alongside junior doctors, who will also strike on Thursday and Friday this week.
The strikes have prompted NHS leaders in our region to tell patients to use services wisely.
Dr Fiona Head is chief medical officer at NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough:
“During this week’s industrial action, it’s crucial that NHS services are used wisely, so if you’ve not been informed that your planned appointment has been cancelled, then please attend as normal,” she said.
“While there’s likely to be disruption to NHS services, it’s important that those who need urgent medical care continue to come forward as normal, particularly in an emergency or life-threatening situations in which case, please dial 999.
“Other NHS services are still available for you and your loved ones, and if need medical help or advice, or are unsure if you should go to hospital, then please visit NHS 111 online first.”
The NHS is expecting to see staffing similar to ‘Christmas Day’ levels during the strikes.
A 6% pay rise for consultants and 6% plus a £1,250 lump sum for junior doctors has been implemented by the government but the BMA is calling for full pay in line with 2008/09 levels.
Strikes will create 'further misery for patients'
Health Secretary and North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay said this week’s strikes will create “further disruption and misery for patients and NHS colleagues.
“In the face of ongoing and escalating strike action, we will continue to take steps to protect patient safety and ensure the health service has the staff it needs to operate safely and effectively.”
Consultants and junior doctors are also planning to strike on October 2, 3 and 4.
