The organisers of the Burghley Horse Trials in Stamford tell us they 'couldn't take the financial risk' of having to cancel this year's event at the last minute.

After being postponed last year due to the pandemic, it was scheduled to go ahead in September of 2021.

However, the annual event was called off for the second year in a row last week.

Elizabeth Inman's one of the directors:

"We haven't got any Covid insurance like all the major sporting events.

"The costs of running something as significant as the _Burghley Horse Trials-_which is a televised, international sporting event-are quite substantial.

"Without that insurance, if we'd have pressed ahead and then had to cancel at the last minute, we'd have been in a shocking situation financially.

"We've had to protect ourselves, to make sure we're in the strongest position possible to go forwards next year, when indeed it's our sixtieth-year anniversary."
