Burghley Horse Trials: Organisers "in full steam" ahead of 2022 return
The world-renowned event in Stamford has been cancelled twice because of Covid
Organisers of the Burghley Horse Trials in Stamford have told Greatest Hits Radio they're "in full steam" ahead of the event's return later this year.
The last two meets were cancelled due to Covid, but over 170,000 Eventing fans could be in attendance from 1st to 4th of September.
The prize fund is the largest it has ever been in the event's 60 year history, with a first prize of ÂŁ100,000.
Event director Martyn Johnson told Greatest Hits Radio: "Covid's been huge. It's taken over everyone's lives. It's clearly been a big impact to the local economy, and a big impact to the world of outdoor events. To have the event back in 2022 is a huge plus. We're now really looking forward and now in full steam.
"We're planning for a full Burghley but we also have to be sensible and think about what could happen in all of the planning aspects of the event. We want to have it bigger and better than ever before but we have to also appreciate the world we live in at the moment."
It comes after a hugely successful year for British Eventing. Martyn added: "Not only were we successful at the Olympics, but also at the European Championships in Switzerland last year. We had not only a team gold but a clean sweep of gold, silver and bronze.
"Eventing is a really strong sport at the moment. This is definitely the place to be and where the world's best come to compete."
