Body found in Peterborough river following police search

Cambridgeshire Police officers searching the River Nene in Peterborough have found the body of a man.

It was discovered at around 11am yesterday (25/05) after extensive searches.

The man was seen on Friday afternoon in Bridge Street and was identified as a person wanted on suspicion of shoplifting offences.

Officers attended and the man ran from the scene before entering the water.

While formal identification hasn't yet taken place, the man’s family have been informed.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and the case will be passed to the coroner.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) by the force’s Professional Standards Department.
