Anglian Water "considering" BBQ ban at Sykes Lane
A decision has not yet been made, but staff are monitoring the situation
Anglian Water say discussions are being had on whether to introduce a BBQ ban at Sykes Lane, on Rutland Water.
Currently, visitors to the popular location are being told not to bring disposable BBQs and to use the designated spaces provided.
However, staff are "monitoring" the situation and will take action on bringing in a complete ban if rules aren't followed.
It's after a number of supermarket chains took disposable BBQs off shelves, with Fire and Rescue services across the country urging people to think twice about using them when months of dry weather has increasing the risk of fire spreading.
Sarah McGhie, from Anglian Water, says we're in "unusual times" and things are being reviewed daily:
'We do ask people to stick to the designated BBQ areas, we do have staff going out and patrolling and making sure people are not setting up rogue BBQs elsewhere on Rutland Water, they shouldn't be doing that.'
'In a designated area, you've got things that are elevated and there's a certain amount of safety around it, however we're in unusual times at the moment hence we're monitoring it closely, we've got people walking around the parks, walking around the areas - we are reviewing it on a daily basis.'
'Please, please be mindful that at the moment the ground is so dry, it's just tinder out there. Leaving litter is wrong at any level but right now leaving stuff behind (like glass bottles) the sun will pierce right through it, it will catch fire immediately.'
