A dog trainer from Peterborough says banning XL American bulldogs is not a long-term solution to stopping dog attacks.

This follows calls to ban the breed after 3 people - including an 11-year-old - suffered injuries caused by one at the weekend.

Two men had to be taken to hospital to be treated, after suffering blows to their shoulders and arms.

The footage of the attack went viral on social media.

Suella Braverman took to Twitter and said: "This is appalling. The American XL Bully is a clear and lethal danger to our communities, particularly to children.

"We can’t go on like this.

"I have commissioned urgent advice on banning them."

However, we spoke to a Peterborough-based dog trainer, who says this might not be the right solution.

Justine Steel from 'Just Dogs' says:

"The problem with the XL bully is they are huge and if things go wrong then the outcome is likely to be much worse than if it goes wrong with a pomeranian, chihuahua or even a labrador.

"Do not be fooled as every dog has the capability to bite and do harm.

"I understand why we're asking to ban the breed, but in my opinion, this is a short-term fix.

"If ban this breed, then the people happy to have dogs of this nature will likely go and cross another breed with types like this and create another similar dog."
