A woman from Stamford who lost both grandmas during lockdown says the pandemic should have been handled better.

Today marks five years since the first lockdown was announced.

It could have been dealt with a lot better

Many people, like Tegan, were not able to visit their loved ones in hospital.

Tegan, from Stamford, said:

I was a shell of myself

"Not just for myself but hundreds of thousands of people have gone through the same thing."

"Normally when you say goodbye to someone you can say it at the time it happens."

"I couldn't and I was a shell of myself."

"It's incredibly unfair because that's my family and I should have been able to see my family."

"My two grandparents were on their deathbeds and I should have been able to see them in their last moments and given them some happiness."

"Reflecting back on it now, I don't think that was took into account and in hindsight it could have been dealt with a lot better."

Tegan was unable to attend one of her grandma's funerals and prevented from visiting the other when she was dying in hospital.

I should have been able to see my family

During lockdown, Matt Hancock, Health Secretary at the time said:

"Wanting to be with someone you love at the end of their life is one of the deepest human instincts and it's a moment that will be with you forever."

"Done right, it can help those left behind to cope and it brings comfort to those who are dying."

"Coronavirus of course has made this much more difficult."

"I've been really moved and upset by some of the heart-breaking stories of people dying without a loved one nearby."

He went on to announce new procedures to limit the risk of infection whilst "wherever possible giving people's closest loved ones a chance to say goodbye."
