An evensong to celebrate Rutland's history and identity is taking place today.

A special service, commemorating England's smallest county, is taking place today at Peterborough Cathedral.

Attending the event is the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, High Sheriff, Richard Cole, participants from local schools, and a sermon from the Bishop of Peterborough Right Reverend Debbie Sellin.

It's great to come together as a community

High Sheriff, Richard Cole, said:

"I moved to Rutland whilst it was still part of Leicestershire, and it was great when Rutland became independent."

"I think people celebrate what is local, and we celebrate that difference and what makes us unique."

"I think with Rutland being so small, it's great to come together as a community to do that."

"This has been one of the highlights of my year, and it's something to look forward to and mark almost the end of my year."

In a social media post, MP Alicia Kearns said:

'As the government's proposals to reorganise our Councils puts the future of Rutland at risk, please save the date for our county service to celebrate the people and county of Rutland.'

'Come and support our sense of identity, historical traditions and the wonderful little county Rutland is with your friends and family.'

The service will commence at 3:30pm.
