A primary school in Peterborough is entering school sports tournaments for the first time in 8 years
It's after Highlees Primary School fundraised for new sports kit
A primary school in Peterborough says funding for new sports kit is giving children more opportunities.
It's after Highlees Primary school played in their first sports tournament in 8 years.
These competitions are part of being at school and growing up
The school hosted a movie night for the pupils in October to raise money for new sports kits.
This raised over £500 and resulted in 14 new kits. It also meant children could start playing in sports tournaments.
Their first competition was a year 3 and 4 football game against Jack Hunt school on Thursday 14th November.
The school said they're grateful for the support from the community and parents who helped raising money for the kits.
The kids were incredibly proud and excited
Sam Copeland, assistant head teacher at the school, said:
"The kids were incredibly proud and excited. They couldn't contain themselves when they tried it on for the first time."
"They went to all the different classrooms and showed the kit off."
"When it came to the game last week, they couldn't wait."
"I think sports competitions are part of being a child. I think it's part of being at school and growing up."
"It's learning the importance of competitions and experiencing winning and losing and how you're going to deal with that."
"Due to how long it's been, it means some children would have had their whole time at Highlees and not experienced these competitions, so it's something we were keen to change."
