Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry toll hikes put on hold

It's after £1.6m of Government funding has been secured

Proposed price hikes on the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry early next year, have been put on hold, after a £1.6million grant from the Government has been secured.

Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council were urging ministers to plug the financial gap left by the Covid-19 pandemic, as fewer people were travelling.

The charge for a car will stay at £2, or £1 for pre-paid journeys.

The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee said each council will receive £821,553 from the compensation scheme set up by the Government to help local authorities deal with the impact of the coronavirus.

This will cover the period up to July 2020. A further application for a second tranche of funding to cover the remainder of the financial year’s losses is also anticipated to be successful.

The bridge and ferry carry about 18 million vehicles a year. They receive no government subsides
