A rare red weather warning has been issued for parts of the South West today (Friday 18 February) - meaning there is a danger to life from flying debris.

Storm Eunice has hit the region and could bring winds of up to 100-miles per hour.

People across Devon are being urged not to travel and to work from home instead, whilst many places have closed their doors in a bid to avoid the bad weather.

The Exeter-based Met Office issued the red warning for wind from 7.00am - 12.00pm, mainly affecting coastal regions.

They say Storm Eunice is expected to cause 'significant disruption and dangerous conditions'.

This morning, another red warning for wind was issued for the South/South East of England, affecting areas like Portsmouth and London.

There is also an amber warning for wind in place for the entire South West region, which is in force between 5.00am - 9.00pm.

Western Power Distribution say they have contacted nearly 1.6 million customers on their Priority Services Register to reassure them that teams are in place and read to go.

Operations Director Graham Halladay said: “We are as ready as we can be to respond to Storm Eunice. The teamwork at WPD is second to none and I’d like to reassure customers that we will restore their supplies as quickly as we safely can.

“If anyone sees a fallen power line, please call 105. Our staff have the training and equipment to deal with it. Fallen power lines can still be live, which means they are capable of delivering a fatal shock.”
